Project Team for Advanced Climate Modeling

Projecting the changing global environment to respond to public concern

There is concern that global climate change caused by human activities will have serious impacts on our lives. Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology has joined a national program for global change projection “Integrated Research Program for Advancing Climate Models (TOUGOU)” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Project, and established “Project Team for Advanced Climate Modeling” as the axis for its promotion. To provide trustworthy information on future environment, we continue to develop an atmosphere-ocean coupled general circulation model, which has long been in use for global change prediction, and an earth system model, which can directly handle human activities such as carbon dioxide emissions and deforestation. Problems to be tackled using the developed models are those attracting social attentions, such as whether the extreme weather increases or decreases due to global change, and how much reduction of carbon dioxide emission is required in order to mitigate temperature rise to an appropriate level. We are also actively involved in international frameworks of scientists working on climate change issues, aiming to, among others, contribute from Japan to the sixth Assessment Report on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, due in 2021, and consequently the Implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. In addition, we will work on effective distribution of simulation data in cooperation with other research institutions so that the results obtained can be used in various fields related to mitigation of and adaptation for global warming. It is our hope that the results of these activities will from foundations for thinking about how we will maintain and improve the quality of our daily living under the changing global environment.
