APL held the APL-ICAR Workshop on "Climate Research and Applications for Mitigating Extreme Events in Asia-Pacific” on 7-8 August, 2023 at Miyoshi Hall, JAMSTEC Yokohama Campus, Japan and online with participants from APL/JAMSTEC and ICAR/NUIST besides a few others from University of Tokyo.
Topic: Climate research and its practical applications play a crucial role in mitigating extreme events, such as heatwaves, persistent droughts, and intense floods, in the Asia-Pacific region, which is also vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The region is home to several densely populated countries with economies that rely heavily on climate-sensitive sectors such as disaster management, agriculture, fishery, tourism, energy, and transportation. The ability to predict extreme events is critical for enabling early warning systems and implementing mitigation measures to reduce their impacts. Often these extremes are linked to modes of climate variations and climate variation analysis has emerged as a powerful tool for predicting extreme events. Hence, the application of climate variation analysis has become increasingly important. However, a lot remains to be studied including the understanding of El Niño/Southern Oscillation, El Niño Modoki, the Indian Ocean Dipole and their global teleconnections. Application Laboratory (APL) and Institute of Climate and Application Research (ICAR) would like to discuss the current state of research and strengthen their research collaborations for better predictability of extreme events.
