Expedition result
12 boreholes (including pilot holes, geological test holes, and LWD holes) were drilled at 6 drill sites, at 5 of which Logging While Drilling was carried out and geophysical data were successfully obtained continuously from inside the boreholes between 400 and 1,400 m below the seabed. These drilling operations took place in such a harsh setting that had never been faced in any scientific drilling operation before; due to accumulated strain caused by the plate subduction, the accretionary prism in the drill site area was subject to strong compression stress and the Kuroshio current ran at speeds exceeding 4 knots.
