JAMSTEC’s Response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) (Updated on May 15, 2020)

Following the state of emergency declaration by the Japanese Government, JAMSTEC is reducing its normal business activities. Please see below for details.

JAMSTEC will continue to reduce its business activities at all offices (Yokosuka Headquarters, Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences (YES), Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO), Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research (KOCHI), Tokyo Office, Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC)), including offices located in the prefectures that Japanese Government has lifted a state of emergency.

In connection to this, all staff members are still recommended to work from home remotely.

In addition, JAMSTEC will continue to take necessary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as follows. These measures may be modified, depending on the status of the COVID-19.

We would appreciate your understanding in these circumstances and look forward to continued support from you.

On events

JAMSTEC will cancel or postpone any events until the end of June. Also, all staff members will refrain from attending events and gatherings.

JAMSTEC’s annual research conference, “JAMSTEC2020” which was planned to take place in April, will be postponed until further notice.

On research vessels

All research and expedition cruises by JAMSTEC vessels will be cancelled or postponed until the end of July.

Visiting our offices

During the period of business reduction, entry to the Yokosuka Headquarters, Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences (YES), Tokyo Office, Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research (KOCHI), Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO) and Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) will not be allowed unless you are visiting our offices for the following reasons:

  • Attending JAMSTEC’s competitive bidding.
  • Attending JAMSTEC explanatory meeting for tenderers.
  • Delivering goods.

Also, for the time being, anyone with fever or respiratory symptoms (cough, dyspnea, etc.) is not allowed to enter any of our offices, research vessels, etc.

Use of facilities and equipment by non-JAMSTEC entities

During the period of business reduction, the hyperbaric chambers, multipurpose pool and other facilities will not be available to external users.

Business trips

During the period of business reduction, it is recommended that all staff members cancel or postpone any planned business trips.
