JAMSTEC’s Response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) (Updated on June 1, 2020)

JAMSTEC will continue to take necessary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19: reducing its business activities as below at all offices: Yokosuka Headquarters, Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences (YES), Mutsu Institute for Oceanography (MIO), Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research (KOCHI), Tokyo Office, and Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC): as well as recommending all staff to work from home.

On events

JAMSTEC canceled or postponed any events and all staff will not attend events and gatherings in principle until the end of June.

JAMSTEC2020, annual research conference in April, was postponed until further notice.

On research vessels

JAMSTEC has begun arrangement for research and expedition cruise operations of JAMSTEC vessels, assuming that cruises will resume after August 1.

Visiting our offices

During the period of business reduction, YES, KOCHI, MIO, and GODAC restrict the entry except in the following cases:

  • Attending JAMSTEC’s competitive bidding.
  • Attending JAMSTEC explanatory meeting for tenderers.
  • Delivering goods.

Also, for the time being, anyone with fever or respiratory symptoms (cough, dyspnea, etc.) is not allowed to enter any of our offices, research vessels, etc.

Use of facilities and equipment by non-JAMSTEC entities

During the period of business reduction, the hyperbaric chambers, multipurpose pool and other facilities will not be available to external users as a general rule.

Business trips

During the period of business reduction, it is recommended that all staff members cancel or postpone any planned business trips.

These measures are subject to change, depending on the status of the COVID-19.
