Supporting the realization of Japan as a maritime nation through the newest science and technology, contributing to the sustainable development and maintenance of the people, society, and the Earth.
Japan Agency for
Marine-Earth Science and
Technology (JAMSTEC)
President
Hiroyuki YAMATO ,
Supporting the realization of Japan as a maritime nation through the newest science and technology, contributing to the sustainable development and maintenance of the people, society, and the Earth.

Japan is surrounded by oceans on all four sides, oceans; are the foundation of the country's existence, providing trade, security, energy, food, and resources. In addition, the deep sea spreads close to the Japanese archipelago, ocean currents flow in a complicated direction from north to south and the ocean floor is composed of several plates, making it an extremely important field for research in the earth, ocean, and life sciences so it is a perfect place to lead the world in the creation of new science and technology.

Under these favorable social and natural conditions, JAMSTEC's long-term vision is "creating the future of the earth through promoting integrated understanding of the Oceans, Earth, Life Humanity and Collaborative Creation with Society." Specifically, our mission is to "Support the realization of Japan as a maritime nation through new science and technology and contribute to the sustainable development and maintenance of the People, Society, and the Earth," a mission that we believe only JAMSTEC can fulfill.

In addition, JAMSTEC is required to continue to play a role as a core institution of marine science and technology in Japan in response to the domestic and international challenges outlined in the Basic Plan for the Ocean and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), etc., in the fourth mid- to long-term goal ("Goals for JAMSTEC to achieve in its business operations") presented by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Based on JAMSTEC's mission, long-term vision, and fourth mid- and long-term goals, JAMSTEC will continue to focus on the following three areas: further exploration of advanced science, further promoting technological development and strengthening of cooperation with society.

As a specific initiative for further exploration of advanced science, the Arctic research vessel currently under construction is expected to serve as an international research platform to elucidate the nature of environmental issues, both domestically and internationally.

In order to respond to the ever-changing demands of society from moment by moment , we will further focus on the development of new technologies while effectively utilizing existing facilities and accumulated technologies and knowledge. We will also participate in the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) as a research promotion corporation in the "Establishment of a Platform for Maritime Security" and as a research representative organization in the Economic Security Key Technology Issues, and conduct research and development related to the review of research systems and research program management.

In addition, as our activities to collaborate with society, we have promoted measures such as the establishment of the Future Design Section in the Corporate Planning Department in FY2022, which has a think-tank function. By collecting and analyzing geopolitical information on trends not only in science and technology but also in the international economy, we will make concrete proposals on issues that Japan should pursue and contribute to Japan's marine science and technology policy while building partnerships and cooperative relationships with other organizations. In addition, as part of our efforts to disseminate and return research results, we are further advancing the existing JAMSTEC Venture Certification System and have launched a project to accumulate the skills needed to clarify business plans and turn them into ventures.

We have launched a new initiative to contribute to STEAM education with the aim of further developing our human resources and connecting with the people of Japan. By utilizing the rich research archives, we have accumulated to date, we will collaborate with related organizations to develop educational materials and classes that are easy to use in the educational field.
In the future, JAMSTEC would like to promote a more proactive approach to the outside world.
Naturally, we have formed a task force within JAMSTEC to improve efficiency through ICT and to enhance the skills of our executives and employees, and we are devoting even more effort to this task.

JAMSTEC will continue to contribute to the development of our country as an organization that can flexibly respond to various challenges toward the realization of a sustainable human society, through research, technology, and administration working in unison to advance research and development.
We look forward to your continued understanding and support of JAMSTEC's activities.
