Inauguration of the JAMSTEC Mutsu Institute for Oceanography

On October 1, 2000 JAMSTEC (President: Takuya Hirano) will begin operations at the Mutsu Institute for Oceanography to respond to new developments in northern sea research. The Institute is being positioned as a center for oceanographic research that contributes to a greater understanding of global environmental changes.

Accordingly, the name Mutsu Branch will change to Mutsu Institute for Oceanography on that date.

As well as continuing the operation and management of the oceanographic research vessel "Mirai", maintenance, management and repair of TRITON (marine observation) buoys and other observation systems, Mutsu Institute for Oceanography will conduct research focusing on material (carbon) cycle, and ocean environmental change.
