1. Description of JAMSTEC
Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC) was established in 1971 as a general oceanographic institution, a special incorporation created as a result of industry-academia-government cooperation to promote ocean science and technology. It comes under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japanese Government and receives most of its annual budget from Government.

2. Seattle Office
In April 2001, JAMSTEC took steps to establish a Seattle Office to maintain direct close liaison with oceanographic institutions and agencies located primarily in the western part of the U.S. and Canada with a view to assisting effective implementation of global change research and ocean observation programs as required.
