GODAC to Host Open House to Offer Science Wonders of
Earth and Ocean

The Global Oceanographic Data Center(GODAC) of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC: Yasuhiro Kato, President) will host an open house on November 15, 2009, to enhance public awareness of the latest technological development in ocean science and activities undertaken by GODAC.

The open house will take place as part of the first "Kube Techno Festa - Toward the International Information Technology (IT) and Financial Center (*).”

Theme : Explore the Wonders of the Ocean and the Earth!
Open house will focus on three main areas: deep ocean, Earth’s environment, and information technology. Visitors will be given an opportunity to learn about the mysteries and wonders of the ocean and the Earth, by participating in tours of the GODAC facilities, scientific experiments and hands-on activities.

Open house features :

1) Research facilities at GODAC including the storage server

2) Scientific exhibits and experiments about the ocean and the Earth, including a replica of the SHINKAI6500, specimens of deep-sea organisms, and deep-sea video footage

3) Hands-on activities

Craft corner (e.g. sand art)
Picture book story-telling for Kids
Hands-on class on plankton, deep-sea organisms and Earth’s environment
Virtual experience of a deep-sea submersible exploration
Operation of "NIRAI KANAI 150", a remotely operated underwater vehicle owned by GODAC

4) IT experience

Tour of IT facilities, including the machine room and operation room
Indexing game using deep-sea images
IT tour for kids
"Let’s Access Ocean Data!" - Introduction to ocean data at GODAC/JAMSTEC

5) Others

Stamp rally for the GODAC license

* Kube Techno Festa – Towards the International IT and Financial Center
Nago City was designated as a special IT and financial zone in 2002 to encourage external investment into the local industry. Kube Techno Festa is designed to provide an opportunity to enhance public understanding of the city’s IT and financial zone program as well as their interest in businesses relocating under the program. The event also aims to help foster ties between the businesses and local schools, and will be joined by an open house of the IT and financial corporations in the Kube district, the fifth school festival of Okinawa National College of Technology, GODAC’s open house and the Employment and Human Resources Development Organization of Okinawa.
