Global Oceanographic Data Center Open Day

The Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC) of JAMSTEC will host an annual open house on November 23 as described below. The event will feature a variety of activities to enhance interest in cutting-edge marine science and technology along with research activities at GODAC.

GODAC will mark the 10th anniversary since it opened in Nago City in November 2001. The open house is also part of the "2011 Kube Techno Festa - Toward a Global Base for IT and Financial Services (*)", an annual technological fair supported by Nago City.

Theme : "The Wonders of the Ocean and the Earth"
With three main theme areas: the deep ocean, the Earth's environment, and information technology, the open house will offer a variety of activities to explore the wonders and mysteries of the ocean and the Earth.
Open house features :

Exhibitions on marine-earth science and technology
- 10th anniversary event: History of GODAC in pictures (photo panels and slides)

Hand craft class for children
3)
"Ebi gechu (Shrimp catch)!" - Catch zoo plankton in the water tank and culture it at home !-
4)
"Deep ocean maze" - Wander through the dark maze and meet mysterious deep-sea creatures -
3D simulation experience: "Maneuvering" the manned research submersible "Shinkai 6500"
5)
Hands-on experiments about the ocean
6)
Quizzes and games "Searching the deep-sea" & "Deep sea karuta*"
*Karuta is a traditional Japanese card game.
7)
New digital media archiving system at GODAC
8)
Touch preserved samples of deep sea creatures (in cooperation of Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium)

*Kube Techo Festa 2011 – Towards a Global Base for the IT and Financial Services

The Kube district is the center of the Nago City's initiative to transform the city into a global base for IT and financial services. The annual Kube Techno Festa is designed to increase public awareness of the businesses in the Kube District and foster ties between them and local schools.
