Ocean mixing beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica
概要
Ice shelves around Antarctica are vulnerable to an increase in ocean-driven melting, with the melt rate depending on ocean temperature and the strength of circulations inside the ice-shelf cavities. We present measurements of velocity, temperature, salinity, turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate and thermal variance dissipation rate beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica. These measurements were obtained by CTD, ADCP and turbulence sensors mounted on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The highest turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate is found near the grounding line. The thermal variance dissipation rate increases closer to the ice-shelf base, with a maximum value found ~0.5m away from the ice. The observed turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate near the ice is used to estimate basal melting of the ice shelf. The dissipation-rate-based melt rate estimates is sensitive to a parameter in the linear approximation of universal function of the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory for stratified boundary layers. We argue that our estimates of basal melting from dissipation rates are within a range of previous estimates of basal melting.

Interannual salinity variations in the northwestern Bering Sea associated with the Bering Strait throughflow and sea surface height in the Arctic Ocean
The correlation between transport via the Bering Strait throughflow (BTF) and sea surface salinity (SSS) in the Bering Sea was examined using an atmosphere-ocean-ice coupled model, MIROC4h. The SSS in the northwestern Bering Sea, including Anadyr Bay, was high when BTF transport was large in the cold season. The BTF transport was strongly correlated with high sea surface height (SSH) in the northeastern Bering Sea and with low SSH in the southwestern Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. That the low SSH along the Russian coast in the Arctic Ocean was uncorrelated with the high SSH in the Bering Sea means that the SSH in the Arctic Ocean affects the BTF and the SSS independently of the SSH in the Bering Sea. The high SSS anomalies associated with BTF variations were due to increases of horizontal salt convergence by advection and decreases of sea-ice melting.

Autonomous Investigations of Marginal Ice Zone Processes
概要
The observed reduction of Arctic summertime sea ice extent and expansion of the marginal ice zone (MIZ) have profound impacts on the balance of processes controlling sea ice evolution, including the introduction of several positive feedback mechanisms that may act to accelerate melting. Examples of such feedbacks include increased upper ocean warming though absorption of solar radiation, elevated internal wave energy and mixing that may entrain heat stored in subsurface water masses (e.g. the relatively warm Pacific Summer (PSW) and Atlantic (AW) waters) and elevated surface wave energy that acts to deform and fracture sea ice, all of which grow in importance with increasing open water extent.
Investigations of MIZ dynamics must resolve the short spatial and temporal scales associated with the processes that govern the exchange of momentum, heat and freshwater near the atmosphere-ice-ocean interface while also achieving the spatial scope and temporal persistence required to characterize how the balance of processes shifts as a function of evolving open water fraction and open water fetch to the south. The recent Office of Naval Research (ONR) Marginal Ice Zone program employed an integrated system of autonomous platforms to provide high-resolution measurements that extend from open water, through the MIZ and deep into ice-covered regions while providing persistence to quantify evolution over an entire summertime melt season. This talk will provide an overview of the strategy developed by the ONR MIZ team and present early results from the 2014 field program, with a particular focus on glider-based observations that spanned from open water to deep within the pack.

Observational and modeling studies of the Arctic Ocean at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: an overview
概要
This presentation focuses on the environmental changes in the Arctic Ocean which are evident and exceed practically all previously observed extremes. The major goal of this talk is to describe WHOI’s vision and understanding of the rapidly changing Arctic environment, identify priorities and provide recommendations for Arctic studies during next decade. In particularly, based on analysis of hypotheses, implementation and results of such WHOI international projects as ”The Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project (BGEP: 2003-2015)”, “Ice-Tethered Profiler (ITP: 2004-2015)”, “Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (AOMIP: 1999-2011)” and “Forum for Arctic Modeling and Observational Synthesis (FAMOS: 2012-2015)” this presentation will show that in order to understand causes of Arctic variability and to predict future climate changes it is important to enhance observational networks in the Arctic and to validate and improve climate models. New technologies and instruments are needed for developing an automated and inexpensive arctic observing network. In this sense, the international collaboration in both observational and modeling activities is a key for success.
