Project Team for Risk Information on Climate Change

Project Team for Risk Information on Climate Change ended at the end of March, 2017.

Supporting risk management on global change through computer simulations

Concerns are growing over impacts of human-induced global warming on our everyday life. JAMSTEC has been undertaking "Program on Risk Information on Climate Change" funded by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) since FY 2012 by establishing a dedicated project team. For generating and disseminating information on global environmental change based on computer simulation, we are developing numerical models such as an atmosphere-ocean coupled model, which has traditionally been used for global warming projection, and an earth system model that can directly deal with human activities including carbon dioxide emission and deforestation. Also, we actively participate in international frameworks on global change such as Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and World Climate Research Program (WCRP) in order to contribute to setting up the protocol for global change projection experiments being discussed by scientists from across the world, according to which we perform projection experiments using the models developed at JAMSTEC. Effective dissemination of the simulation data is also our important task for facilitating collaboration with researchers working on impact assessment.
