Provision of scientific knowledge for Marine Protected Areas

To decide upon Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), it is necessary to first select Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs). When selecting EBSAs in the offshore / deep sea around Japan, we provided species diversity and distribution data for deep-sea organisms in a deep-sea chemosynthetic community and trenches obtained by JAMSTEC. The EBSAs in the Japanese waters were selected by the government and also accepted by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). http://www.env.go.jp/nature/biodic/kaiyo-hozen/kaiiki/kaitei/index.html https://www.cbd.int/ebsa/ The MPAs will be selected from the EBSAs by 2020; the government is currently examining the data. For the policy of selection of MPAs, we are discussing in government committees.
