About us

Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS) is a research program that contributes to restoration, in particular restoration of fisheries, in the Tohoku region by revealing the impact of the earthquake and tsunami on the marine ecosystems in the coastal and offshore waters, and the restoration process of the marine ecosystems.

To contribute to the restoration of fishery grounds affected by the giant earthquake and subsequent massive tsunami on March 11, 2011, the Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS) research program was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in January 2012.

The research program aims to support the restoration of fisheries based on scientific data on the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake on coastal marine ecosystems, environmental changes and their recovery processes. The research program, led by Tohoku University (representative institute), the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI) of the University of Tokyo (deputy representative institute) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) (deputy representative institute), will be performed for 10 years with close cooperation among the relevant institutes, and various investigations and research activities are planned.

JAMSTEC established the “Analyses of Changes in East Japan Marine Ecosystems Research and Development Group” to elucidate the mechanisms of change in marine ecosystems by using advanced observation and analysis techniques.

What is TEAMS?

Fresh seafoods such as rockfish, cod, squid----

The ocean in the Sanriku area of the Tohoku Region had rich fisheries that provided a habitat for a variety of seafoods fish and shellfish familiar on the dinner table . However, the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake, which occurred on March 11, 2011, and subsequent massive tsunamis changed marine ecosystem significantly.

To contribute to the revitalization of fisheries in the Tohoku Region, the Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS) research program was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in January 2012.

Led by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Tohoku University, and the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, TEAMS conducts research to elucidate the impacts of the earthquake and tsunamis on marine ecosystems in the Tohoku coastal regions and its offshore areas and to scientifically investigate the restorationchanging process.

Activities

  • 1. Fishery environment monitoring.
  • 2. Ecosystem space model building.
  • 3. Fishery reconstruction assistance of Sanriku coastal areas.
